If you find out that you're meeting a big-time celebrity, it's only natural to want to make a good impression. But as rare as those opportunities go, there's also a chance that things won't go the way you expect them to. Unfortunately, KC Concepcion knows exactly how that feels—and she lived to tell the tale 13 years later.
In a vlog about her perfume collection, KC recalled an embarrassing moment that happened between her and Korean actor Jang Dong Gun, who's known for his hit K-dramas including Arthdal Chronicles (2019), A Gentleman's Dignity (2012), and Suits (2018). It happened in 2008, when the two attended the Clinton Global Initiative in Asia in Hong Kong.
According to KC, because the actor and the former US President Bill Clinton were both going to be there, she wanted to use a new perfume to have them remember her. The problem was, the fragrance's bottle was too big to bring in her purse for the event. So to make sure it will last all night, KC doused herself in the perfume—all application rules be damned.
"Sabi ko totodo ko na 'to kasi mahaba yung gabi ko... Kailangan mabangong mabango ako. Kailangan maalala niya talaga ako," she recalls with a laugh. She sprayed the perfume everywhere, including her feet and her bag. "As in! Kung saan may balat nag-spray ako," quips KC.
And then the unimaginable happened. Not even two minutes afer practically bathing in perfume, she ran into the former president and Korean actor inside the hotel elevator. She recalls, "Alam niyo ba hiyang-hiya talaga ako. Sabi ko, shet ang bango ko."
KC knew her scent was overwhelming, but tried to play it cool, even greeting the two with a curt good evening. But when the elevator doors closed, Jang Dong Gun started coughing! KC felt so embarrassed that she avoided any form of eye contact. "'Di ko nalang siya tinignan. Alam kong ako yung sanhi ng pagka-ubo niya sa elevator," she says. Apparently, she didn't get chance to speak to the actor at the event either.
After the incident, KC swore she'll never wear that perfume again: "Talagang sinumpa ko na 'yung perfume na 'yon. 'Yung perfume na akala kong nakakaganda, tinapon ko na kasi hiyang-hiya talaga ako."
The moral of the story? "Keep it subtle. [Being a] minimalist is key. Less is more," KC concludes—at least when it comes to putting on perfume and meeting a Korean superstar.
