In case you need a refresher, Kathryn Bernardo recently won the Best Actress accolade at the 35th PMPC Star Awards held at Resorts World Manila last Sunday for her 2018 blockbuster drama, The Hows of Us. She tied with Sarah Geronimo, who also received her win for her drama-fantasy film Miss Granny.
Apart from Kathryn's winning look that night, the actress further impressed the audience with a moving and humbling speech on success that would do well for other struggling artists to hear. She, of course, first thanked everyone who made their film possible, specifically Direk Cathy Garcia Molina for always pushing her to do her best. Secondly, to the screams of their devoted fan base, she then thanked her boyfriend and co-winner of the Movie Love Team of the Year award, Daniel Padilla, owing part of her performance's success to him.
After her words of gratitude came a humbling reminder of the personal struggles she's faced in the past. "At a certain point in my career, I started questioning my capacity as an actress," she reveals in her speech. "I questioned why things weren’t working out the way I wanted to. Binigay mo ang lahat pero bakit ganyan? Ang dami kong whys last year before we shot The Hows Of Us.”
However, despite her own doubts, Kath has always managed to power through, learning that with true success comes the inevitability of failure, in order to eventually grow in her craft and to become a better person as well.
“Life is not perfect and [things] don’t always go the way we want them to. Itong award na ‘to is a validation that true dedication really pays off. Napatunayan din nito na it’s okay to not be okay sometimes. It’s okay to get tired in the process. It’s okay to fail even. Kasi lahat ‘yan parte ng journey natin. What’s important is that you stand up and try again until you’re able to make that dream a reality. I share this award sa lahat ng nangangarap.”
Following her win, the actress took it to her Instagram to further express her thanks. "Thank you so much PMPC Star Awards for honoring me with this recognition! It is with a grateful heart that I accept this award," she writes. "Like what I’ve said in my speech, this means so much to me... I hope this award inspires a little girl somewhere out there that it’s okay to dream big!"
