The Plot

Elijah plays Kalel, a teenage Catholic student, who seems to be alarmingly unbothered despite the harsh reality forced upon him—a religious mother who ran off for an affair, and a careless sister who is crazy in love with a junkie boyfriend. He has no choice but to live with his detached, priest father. As a 15-year-old boy filled with numbness and curiosity, he starts talking to strangers online allowing him to go through a whirlwind of vices and pleasure that further tests his own morality.

The Cast

Along with Eljah, Kalel, 15 presents us a solid, powerful cast including Jaclyn Jose (Ma’ Rosa, Patay na si Hesus), Eddie Garcia (Bwakaw), Elora Españo (Tandem), Gabby Padilla (Billie and Emma, Eerie), and Lou Veloso (Water Lemon).

Sitting on the director’s chair is Jun Robles Lana. From winning Best Director at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2019 and Best Screenplay at the Gawad Urian Awards in 2020 for this social drama film, Lana proves that his progressive storytelling is a success in breaking the HIV stigma in Filipino society. He is also known for his other films such as Die Beautiful (2016), Ang Babaeng Allergic sa Wifi (2018), and Unforgettable (2019).

The Release Date

After being shown only at limited theaters globally and locally, the film’s production house The IdeaFirst Company announced on Twitter that Kalel, 15 will exclusively screen on Netflix starting this December 5, 2020.
