Julia Barretto is now officially part of the Philippine Coast Guard

In a Facebook post by the organization, they announced that the actress was sworn into the PCG’s Auxiliary K9 Squadron as Ensign Julia Barretto yesterday, September 1.

Other volunteers who joined the uniformed service alongside Julia include Auxiliarist Ando Cruise Catipay, Auxiliarist Jalil Laidan, and Auxiliarist Harold Jocel Talan. The oath-taking of the four was held at the PCG's National Headquarters at Port Area, Manila.

Coast Guard Admiral George Ursabia, who led the ceremony, thanked the new members of the PCGA for their commitment to serving the country through "humanitarian missions and disaster response operations."

Meanwhile, as the most senior of the new appointees, Julia was given the opportunity to leave a message in behalf of her members. As per the PCG’s Facebook post, Julia “pledged to actively support the initiatives of the unit towards the delivery of humble and compassionate service to the Filipino people.”

Julia’s Duties in the Philippine Coast Guard

FYI, the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary unit is a uniformed volunteer organization. Established in 1972 by the PCG, their members are tasked to help in the protection of marine life, promote the safety of life and property at sea, aid in maritime search and rescue operations, and participate in recreational activities that enhance maritime community relations.

The K9 Squadron, in particular, are accompanied by K9 units or trained police dogs to help them in search and rescue operations. At the same time, members are also tasked to promote and reinforce animal welfare. During the oath-taking itself yesterday, the Coast Guard Commandant expressed the need for more K9 units in the Philippines to advance national security.
