It's official: She's gearing up to play Kang Mo Yeon!

It's official—Jennylyn Mercardo has been cast to play Song Hye Kyo's role in the local adaptation of the hit Korean drama Descendants of the Sun. Her character, named Dr. Maxine's dela Cruz, is the equivalent of Kang Mo Yeon in the popular series. She will be acting alongside Dingdong Dantes, who will be playing special forces captain Lucas Manalo.

With the announcement, GMA Network released Jennylyn's first official photo channeling her role in the series. It features the actress with the character's signature ponytail and wispy fringe. She seems to be mimicking the doctor's minimalist style, too, if her plain white top and pendant necklace are any indication.

To prepare for the role of a doctor, she also underwent medical training, which included learning basic emergency procedures like CPR. In a video, the actress expressed her excitement for playing the now-iconic K-drama leading lady role.

Jennylyn posted about the news on her personal Instagram account as well, sharing how she found out that she got the role. "When I heard they started taping already and preparing for the soap, ako din nacurious kung sino nga ang napili para sa role," she writes. "When I learned that it was me, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for GMA’s trust and also pressured since I know how big this project is."

Ending the post, Jennylyn promises to do what it takes to give justice to the character. "I won’t let you all down. Pangako."

Last June, the actors for the second lead roles of sergeant major Dae Young and army doctor Myeong Joo were also announced to be portrayed by Rocco Nacino and Jasmine Curtis-Smith, respectively.
