South Korea is reeling from one of its worst aviation disasters in decades. On Sunday morning, Jeju Air Flight 2216 crash-landed at Muan International Airport, killing 179 of the 181 people on board. The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of grief and questions as investigators work to uncover the cause of the crash. Here’s what we know so far.

What Happened to Jeju Air Flight 2216?

Jeju Air Flight 2216, a Boeing 737-800, was en route from Bangkok to Muan in South Korea’s southwest. The crash occurred around 9 a.m. local time as the plane attempted to land. According to The New York Times, the aircraft’s landing gear appeared to have malfunctioned, leading it to skid down the runway on its belly before overshooting and hitting a barrier. The collision triggered an explosion that engulfed the plane in flames.

Footage shared by South Korean television showed the white-and-orange plane sliding at high speed, with smoke pouring from its tail section. By Sunday evening, emergency responders had confirmed 179 fatalities, with only two survivors—both crew members—rescued from the wreckage.

What Was the Cause?

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities are exploring multiple possibilities. CNN reported that the control tower had warned the pilots about a potential bird strike shortly before the crash. Bad weather and a possible hydraulic failure are also being considered.

The plane’s black boxes, containing flight data and cockpit voice recordings, have been recovered and will play a crucial role in determining the cause.

What Was the Plane’s Condition?

The Boeing 737-800 is widely regarded as a reliable aircraft with a strong safety record. Unlike the Boeing 737 Max, which was grounded globally following two fatal crashes, the 737-800 has been described as a “workhorse of the skies.” In a statement, Jeju Air expressed its “deep apology” for the crash and pledged full cooperation with investigators.

Who Were the Victims?

The passengers ranged in age from 3 to 78 and were predominantly South Korean, with two Thai citizens among the dead. Families gathered at Muan International Airport to await news, many breaking into tears as authorities read victim names aloud. DNA samples are being collected to assist in identifying remains, officials said.

Among the heartbreaking stories, a father mourning his daughter, who had been returning to South Korea after visiting family in Thailand, told The Associated Press: “I never thought that this would be the last time we would see each other forever.”

How Is South Korea Responding?

This crash is South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster since 1997, when a Korean Air flight crashed in Guam, killing 229 people. The Jeju Air tragedy comes amid a political crisis in South Korea. Acting President Choi Sang Mok, who assumed office just days before the incident, has declared a weeklong national mourning period and designated Muan as a special disaster zone. Emergency services deployed over 1,500 personnel to search the wreckage and assist families.

International leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Pope Francis, have offered condolences. Boeing has also expressed its willingness to support Jeju Air during the investigation.

What’s Next?

Investigators will examine the recovered black boxes and other evidence to determine what went wrong. Aviation experts have cautioned against premature conclusions. The crash investigation could take years, according to CNN.
