Award-winning FAMAS and Gawad Urian actress and newly minted Kapamilya Janine Gutierrez is undeniably one of BJ Pascual’s favorite muses. ICYDK, the modelesque olive-skinned star first collaborated with BJ for Preview’s Gen Next feature, styled by then Fashion Assistant MJ Benitez (who’s also one of Janine’s closest friends), and was glammed up by makeup artist Omar Ermita and hair stylist Mark Familara. That serendipitous shoot would be the start of a stylish friendship between BJ and Janine, that has then produced some of the most beautiful photographs in Philippine fashion—her solo Preview cover included.
"I think what makes her so inspiring to shoot, aside from her striking features and modelesque proportions, is her willingness to collaborate! And there's just that special something that I can't describe," BJ tells Preview.
For BJ’s latest vlog entry, he finally films a fashion shoot with Janine inspired by three iconic films: The Birds (1963) by Alfred Hitchcock, Annie Hall (1977) by Woody Allen, and Himala (1982) by Ishmael Bernal. “I wanted to create images that reinforce her versatility as an actress, in addition to her being a fashion darling. So I initially chose three genres, and then thought of iconic fashion moments per genre but the main consideration is that fashion-wise, they're all different from each other,” BJ shares.
MJ tapped multiple local designers and brands like D.D. Daily, Ziggy Savella, Vania Romoff, and vintage label Souvenir to nail each iconic look. “BJ approached me with the three films in mind already but gave me complete freedom to interpret the looks as I wanted! Of course, we wanted people to instantly recognize the movies (and actresses) we were paying tribute to so we went with striking looks that each played a crucial role in the visual language of the films,” the stylist tells Preview.

Janine as Nora Aunor in Himala:
MJ’s notes: “When I think of Himala, Elsa’s (Nora Aunor’s character) white bow dress immediately comes to mind. For this, designer Vania Romoff’s contemporary take came in the form of a puff-sleeved keyhole midi in linen. Since the film centers around Elsa as a faith healer who witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I made sure to give subtle nods to that with vintage accessories from Souvenir.”
Janine as Tippi Hedren in The Birds:
MJ’s notes: “I collaborated again with Vania for a look inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. In the movie, legendary costume designer Edith Head dressed actress Tippi Hedren in a sleeveless wool sheath dress with a matching jacket in pale green. Vania made sure her reinterpretation pid homage to old Hollywood by giving her dress design pointed darts and shirred side seams. Instead of wool, she used a beautiful silk fabric in mint. A cropped jacket and wide belt in the same material completed the look.”
Janine as Diane Keaton in Annie Hall:
MJ’s notes: “As for Annie Hall, while I loved all of Diane Keaton’s outfits in the film (which was clearly inspired by the actress’ personal style), there’s no doubt that the most iconic look was the vest and tie look. I styled a look around a vest that designer Ziggy Savella custom-made for the shoot with a vintage tie and blazer I borrowed from Fed Pua (owner of the store It’s Vintage), plus lots of vintage rings from Souvenir. And because I love menswear in general, we decided to shoot an extra suit layout. This time, the highlight was a chocolate-colored suit set from Deliver Deliver Daily (I made sure to get a suit that’s one size bigger for an oversized fit).”
