In an era of influencers and the chase for anything that’s remotely Instagram-worthy, the truth of the matter is that none of those perfect IG shots you dream of recreating are real. Or they’re not as perfect as they seem from the get-go, at least. Oftentimes, the glossy photos that make it to our feed have already been heavily edited and filtered, not to mention meticulously picked out from the other 300 photos we took for "options." While laboring for that picture-perfect shot is all well and fine, it undoubtedly sets high expectations on today’s younger generation when it comes to how they think they should act and look like on the internet.
It’s this unspoken fact that pushes Amsterdam-based influencer Rianne Meijer to periodically post the unfiltered versions of herself. “I love love love creating nice images and am no stranger to posting some less nice once as well. But let’s be honest: Those perfect loving life pics dominate most of our feeds and it sometimes scares the shit out of me thinking about all these young humans given such high standards,” Rianne explains on one of her IG v.s. Real Life posts.

With over 390k followers, she openly occasionally posts a side-by-side of an outtake, contrasted with the edited Instagram version, proving that no perfect image is as real as they want you to think. It’s an inspiring movement that perhaps more big-wig influencers should consider doing from time to time. “Like I said, these posts are one in 300, maybe 400, and [edited with] some nice filters. So yes to making Instagram a place you leave feeling better, not worse. Let’s make it about inspiring each other and let’s keep it real from time to time.”
