Expectations versus reality!

Since quarantine started, online shopping has become the new norm. However, clicking that "Add to Cart" button isn’t as easy as it sounds. You have to base your shopping decisions on nothing but product photos, which, you have to admit, always look so irresistibly #aesthetic. Good thing there are reviews to help you out, too.

Well, sometimes those impulse buys and well-discerned purchases don’t turn out as expected. You receive the item (cash on delivery, yasss!) and unbox it to discover that it looks nothing like the photos—a shopping nightmare! Well, it happens, but that doesn’t mean you can’t avoid it.

To help you out, we asked a few influencers to share their personal mishaps so you could be more cautious in the future. You’ll find their stories pretty hilarious, too!

“A Jacquemus micro bag. I knew it was going to be small but not as small as I expected. I can barely fit my AirPods. Literally only a coin or maybe the crumbs of a croissant [can fit]. So cray! [Laughs.] The worst thing I’ve ordered online to date.”

“A nice furry carpet. Looked really nice in photos. Looked horrible in person…like a balding dog. I threw it away."

“Worst thing I ordered online siguro are abaca trays. I expected them to be deformed but I low-key set my hopes high pa rin. [Laughs.] But ayun, turns out they were all deformed, plus the color was really off. It’s like an orange red, which was not what I was expecting!”

"I bought this "Star Light LED Projector" online. I meant it to be used as a prop when I teach online classes, and for when I just wanna lay in bed next to my dog Ollie and chill. But when I got the product, it could hardly light up a room! And the stars looked like dots that appeared only if the lamp was close to a wall. Major fail."

“Hmm... I think my worst purchase was a TV rack. I just ordered it in Facebook Marketplace because my friend said it’s okay to order there because of the same-day delivery. But it was really not the same as the one in the photo. [Laughs.]

“It was so small and it’s not as nice as the one in the photo. 'Cause some shops just really get photos from somewhere and don't use actual photos of their products.”

“I ordered this label maker that didn't have all the numbers! Naloka ako. Walang number 1. Kaloka!”

“I ordered this shoe organizer before. Unfortunately, it breaks easily. For fashion items, the worst items I’ve ordered are mostly swimsuits that were way more daring than expected.”

“Hmm... I haven’t actually bought anything too bizarre since I really make sure to read reviews before purchasing anything online, but I’ve ordered a bikini that came out way too tiny for me. I’m already such a petite person so it was just so funny trying it on cause it was literally covering the bare minimum. Tragic 'cause it was so cute online!”

"I bought this Korean bangs clip-on extension so that I could create different hairstyles. Unfortunately, when it arrived, it looked more like a mustache than bangs! It looks fake also when worn so I just ditched it. Good thing it was on sale!"

"Okay, so there was this website where bean bags were being sold. I saw this in a sponsored post, so my boyfriend ordered it. The bean bag I looked into was priced at P3,000 instead of P10,000 from what I remember. I was so excited to receive the bean bag pero what arrived was a fake Gucci scarf! From that day on, never na ako nag-shop sa mga sponsored ads on Instagram!"

"I can’t really remember much, as I’ve learned to be critical of brands’ authenticity and product reviews, but I guess the closest I can think of was that time when I was just new to online shopping. I ordered a pair of loose, straight-cut jeans but it ended up fitting like skinny jeans for me! I learned that for bigger thighs, I should always get a size up to get that loose and baggy look."
