A checklist and recipes for a stylish soiree.
How To Throw An Afternoon Tea Party A checklist and recipes for a stylish soiree.

Perched on an ornate, gilded chair enjoying a hot cup of tea in your mid-length skirt and sheer blouson with satin sleeves, pearls and all... Doesn’t high tea sound so elegant? Or, intimidating. These kinds of parties seem to require a lot of preparation rather than just ordering take-out food and picking up a 6-pack at 7-Eleven. Well, not really.

High tea parties are a more sophisticated gathering of friends, if we may say so, and give a completely different experience. More importantly, it’s totally doable and you don’t even need to bump off the bubbly. And if you want to make this a regular pursuit—because you want your beauty sleep by 9pm—here’s everything you need to throw your own afternoon soiree in style. TEA Offer a variety of teas: from the classics like English Breakfast and Earl Grey to fruity and herbal ones. Make sure milk and sugar are ready, as well.

COCKTAILS AND MOCKTAILS You don’t have to completely eliminate the bubbly. Offer other refreshments like iced tea with a splash of Pimm’s (a fruit liqueur), mimosas (one part champagne and one part OJ) and other fruity concoctions. Essentially, drinks that will break the ice.

MATCHING OR MISMATCHED TEA SET Depending on the feel you want to achieve, your tea set will give character to your table setting. It should include tea pots, tea cups, saucers, milk and sugar bowls. Keep away your mugs first, darlings.

SPREAD You don’t have to bust your butt in the kitchen all day preparing swanky meals. Stick to finger food. You may prepare sandwiches, cookies, cakes, croissants, petit fours and scones. (Hover above for some recipes.) Don’t forget the jam and clotted cream!

TIERED CAKE STAND, PLATES AND CUTLERY Keep in mind that a tea party is self-serve. Make sure you have sufficient crockery for all your guests.
