Not to ruin your existing coffee routine but science has spoken, and there's a healthier way to make a cup of that yummy caffeine.
The European Society of Cardiology has studied links between different coffee brewing methods and risks of heart attacks and death. According to its research, filtered brew is the safest way to make coffee.
The results, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology journal, sayÂthat unfiltered coffee contains 30 times the concentration of lipid-raising substances which has detrimental consequences for heart health.
"Our study provides strong and convincing evidence of a link between coffee brewing methods, heart attacks, and longevity," said study author Professor Dag S. Thelle of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. "Unfiltered coffee contains substances which increase blood cholesterol. Using a filter removes these and makes heart attacks and premature death less likely."
Researchers used data between 1985 and 2003 to come up with the findings. Participants were asked about the amount and type of coffee they consumed, while taking into account smoking, physical activity, and more.
"For people who know they have high cholesterol levels and want to do something about it, stay away from unfiltered brew, including coffee made with a cafetière. For everyone else, drink your coffee with a clear conscience and go for filtered," Professor Thelle concluded.
