Featuring poems she wrote herself!

I was about 11 or 12 when I fell in love with poetry. They taught us in class about the basic structures of writing a poem and each student had to write his/her own, myself included. When I try to look back, I actually just wrote down whatever I felt like writing at that moment, but then surprisingly, the teacher called my name and asked me to read my poem in front of the entire class. Her reaction was quite funny. She said, “Whoa, Kylie! Where did you get that?” Apparently, my poem was really deep for someone my age.

It was my first poem, and although it felt kind of satisfying to get that sort of validation from my teacher, I honestly didn’t think much of it then. I did, however, go home feeling extremely happy about it! The first thing I did was show it to my dad—I was a kid who was proud to have done well in class, so of course I had to show off! Beaming with pride, I told my dad, “Pa, look at my poem!” And I don't think I'd ever forget his reaction either. Pretty much the same as my teacher, he also found it surprisingly deep, and I had no idea why people were reacting that way because I guess I was too young to even understand what being “deep” even means.

The memory of how it all started is still pretty vivid to me. Ever since then, I’ve been writing poetry, which later on evolved into song writing, which then gave birth to my album. I never stopped loving poetry, and thank goodness for social media, it became a lot easier for me to search for new poems and writers on Instagram. That’s where I discovered Memories by Lang Leav. I especially love her poems because they’re so simple yet so powerful. I’ve been writing my own poems on the blank pages of her book, and somehow it makes me feel like we’re collaborating. Sort of. (Crazy idea, I know, but I love her! Haha!)
