The House of Representatives is currently holding a poll on their official website discussing civil unions for same-sex couples in the country. And just in time for #Pride month this June, it's a seemingly fitting question.

Requiring a yes or no vote, the poll is about whether or not one agrees to the current proposal in the Congress to legalize same-sex unions as civil partnerships. As of writing, the results show a total of 157,983 votes with 48% having voted Yes, and 51% voting No, while 1% remains undecided. According to the disclaimer below the poll, it merely exists to "foment public discussion in aid of potential legislation" and does not, in any way, reflect the inclinations and opinions of the House of Representatives.

Currently, there's still a stark absence of an actual law that protects the rights of the LGBT community in the Philippines from discrimination and unlawful violence and killings based on their sexual orientation. The Anti-Discrimination Bill or SOGIE Bill has yet to be passed into law, and it remains in a state of interpolation in the Senate. If not passed by the end of the 17th Congress on June 3, the ADB Bill will be archived and will essentially have to start from scratch.

Meanwhile, only seven provinces, 20 cities, and 3 barangays have official non-discrimination ordinances set to protect LGBTQs in the country.

While the poll has no bearing on whether the proposed law will be passed or not, its results can still echo the country's sentiments and views on whether they believe the LGBT community deserves equal rights as their heterosexual counterparts. Who knows, it might just be taken into account by the Congress.
