House of Gucci might be getting plenty of press and audience praise, but it’s getting lukewarm reviews from critics and a fiery response from the Guccis themselves. Suffice to say, the heirs of the former Gucci chairman Aldo Gucci are pissed.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci is a biopic that follows the dramatic and chaotic lives of Gucci heir Maurizio Gucci and his ex-wife-turned-murderer Patrizia Gucci nee Reggiani. The trailer promises a wild ride with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver starring as the toxic couple, but the Guccis aren’t impressed with their portrayals.

According to a letter released to the press, the Gucci heirs take offense to Gaga’s portrayal of Patrizia, who they describe as a “woman definitively convicted of ordering the murder of Maurizio Gucci.” The family took particular issue with the movie’s “indulgent” portrayal of Patrizia as a “victim” in a misogynistic environment.

In their defense, the Guccis claimed that the brand is an “inclusive company,” and the family members are far from the “hooligans… ignorant and insensitive to the world” as they are portrayed in the film.

“The Gucci family reserve the right to take every initiative (necessary) to protect their name and image and those of their loved ones,” said the Guccis, threatening legal action.

Reggiani also had a few choice words for the House of Gucci cast and crew, saying she was quite “annoyed” with Lady Gaga for not meeting her in preparation for the film, while designer Tom Ford criticized the film for portraying Maurizio’s “tragic” and “bloody” assassination as “camp.”

Despite the Guccis’ public distaste for the film, one thing is certain: the spectacle happening behind the scenes will only increase ticket sales. Moviegoers are loving the drama.
