Most of us know Heart Evangelista for being an outgoing and overall bubbly person who can never be seen without a smile on her face. From the perfectly curated photos on her Instagram page to her vlogs that give us a sneak peek into the luxurious life of this fashion and beauty icon, many would think that Heart has been loved by everyone the moment she set foot in the industry. But what most of us don’t know is that she actually had a hard time during her early days as an actress.
In a recent video on her YouTube channel, she opens up about how she struggled to fit in and adjust to the culture of show business way back when she was just a newbie in the game. “They hated me kasi ang arte-arte ko,” Heart says as she recalls her first audition for the show G-mik.
“Baluktot ako mag-Tagalog ‘cause I grew up in the States. Hindi ako marunong mag ‘po’ and ‘opo.’ So umpisa pa lang, parang [sinasabi nila] ‘ay hindi ko siya bet,’” the 37-year-old shares. In spite of the criticism that was thrown at her, Heart explains that she was just being herself and she was still eager and willing to do what was asked of her. Thanks to her determination, the actress still landed a role on the show, and as part of the main cast, no less!
Heart also goes on to admit that she was once discouraged to act just because she’s a chinita. “I remember somebody telling me, ‘ang liit liit ng mata mo, hindi ka pwede maging artista kasi hindi ka expressive sa mata,’" she says. “I was always, always so heartbroken every time they said na parang [dahil maarte at kikay ako] pang character actress lang ako.”
Luckily, Heart had a strong support system behind her, which included her father who, at that time, always reminded her that she was “unique.” She then passed on the sentiment to her viewers and other aspiring actors dreaming of making it in the industry, stating, “It’s you being different, you being unique, that will set you apart.”
The style maven explains that life will never always be good and how there are a lot of things happening behind the scenes that cannot be shown to the public. Despite this, she reminds her fans that it’s all part of a bigger picture. “Lahat ng pinagdaan mo sa past, parte lang yan para mag-create ng isang magandang masterpiece in life and that is yourself.”
We couldn’t agree more, Heart!
