Potterheads all over the world are alive with all sorts of preparations for HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. Some are reliving the older magic of the books, taking out house scarves from their drawers, and maybe even converting Muggle friends with a good old Harry Potter movie marathon. Wherever the nostalgic enchantments lead, some savory Harry Potter-themed drinks will certainly add to the festive occasion, helping us awaken the witches and wizards within.
Here are a five Harry Potter-themed drinks you can make at home, just in time for the HP reunion:
Since we’re unable to gather at the Leaky Cauldron at the moment, the next best thing would be to brew this classic drink at home. The video below shows four of the most popular ways Butterbeer can be served: regular, frozen, hot, and with ice cream. All it takes is a couple of basic baking ingredients and rum extract for an extra stupefying effect.
2. Polyjuice Potion
Some key ingredients for Polyjuice Potion include stewed lacewing flies, leeches, shredded Boomslang skin, and hair. Fortunately, the Muggle version sounds more appetizing and less time-consuming to make. Just add a dash of matcha powder, ice, simple syrup, and vodka, and mischief will be successfully managed.
3. Unicorn Blood
Once upon a time, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named lived a cursed half-life for drinking unicorn blood. Thankfully, this particular cocktail recipe won’t produce the same effect. Instead, it will bewitch the mind the same way vodka mixed with lemon and syrup does.
4. Amortentia (Love Potion)
Brew with caution, for this drink has been named the most powerful love potion in the world. After mixing in amaretto and gin with lemon juice and cranberry juice, some heart-shaped ice cubes or vibrant red berries could win major house points for presentation.
5. Felix Felicis (Liquid Luck)
A lot of Muggles right now are in need of a good confidence booster just like Liquid Luck—something of an encouraging kick or renewed strength to get through their daily endeavors. This cocktail recipe uses the real-life magic of apple juice, vodka, and tonic water to do the trick—no need to squash horned slugs or find worn out paperback copies of Advanced Potion-Making to perfect it.
One of the most magical things about these drinks is that they can be enjoyed by everyone, not just avid Harry Potter fans. They’re not such bad conversation-starters either, especially if they take inspiration from the imaginative and globally celebrated food paradise that is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter 20th Anniversary special will be available on HBO Max this coming January 1, 2022.
