Major movie alert! K-drama fans, buckle up because some of your favorite actors are coming together for one start-studded film! In an article by Korean media site OSEN, CJ ENM and streaming platform TVing are said to be teaming up for an upcoming movie titled Happy New Year.
The project’s major selling point? It’s team of well-established Korean names, of course! The knockout ensemble cast currently consists of Lee Dong Wook, Kang Ha Neul, Han Ji Min, SNSD’s YoonA, Won Jin Ah, Seo Kang Joon, Jung Jin Young, Lee Hye Young, Lee Kyu Hyung, Ko Sung Hee, Kim Young Kwang, Jo Joon Young, Lee Jin Wook, Won Ji An, and Lee Kwang Soo. Talk about star power!
The film will reportedly follow these 15 individuals as their lives intersect with each other, one way or another, while visiting the Hotel Emrose. Rooftop Prince and Familiar Wife actress Han Ji Min will take the lead as the said hotel’s manager. A competent worker fiercely dedicated to her job, her only problem lies in confessing her romantic feelings for her male friend of 15 years. Alongside her are Lee Dong Wook (Touch Your Heart, Tale of the Nine Tailed) and Kang Ha Neul (When the Camellia Blooms) who will play a hotel CEO, and a heartbroken job-seeker, respectively.
The rest of the characters include SNSD’s YoonA (The K2, The King in Love) as a confident hotelier, Won Jin Ah (Life, Hellbound) as an actress-turned-chambermaid, Seo Kang Joon (Cheese in the Trap, When the Weather Is Fine) as a rising radio personality, and Lee Kwang Soo (The Sound of Your Heart, Live) as Kang Joon’s anxious manager. It seems the film will also involve a whirlwind romance between Kim Young Kwang (Pinocchio, The Guardians) and Ko Sung Hee (My Holo Love, Diary of a Night Watchman) as they go from “their first encounter to preparing for their wedding in the blink of an eye.”
Meanwhile, Lee Jin Wook (Voice, Sweet Home) is set to play a plastic surgeon who frequents Hotel Emrose every Saturday, in hopes of encountering a special someone. Lee Kyu Hyung (Prison Playbook, Hi Bye, Mama), on the other hand, will take on the role of a fortune teller who also often drops by the establishment. Rounding out the cast are Lee Hye Young (Mother, Lawless Lawyer) as the hotel’s doorman, Jung Jin Young (Svaha: The Sixth Finger) as an entrepreneur who crosses paths with his first love from 40 years ago, and Jo Joon Young (Dear M.) and Won Ji An as athletic high school students “embroiled in their friends’ ‘confession challenge.’”
Happy New Year is helmed by seasoned director Kwak Jae Yong, best known for his work in the 2001 romcom film My Sassy Girl. It will be launched in theaters and through TVing as an original movie for the platform.
