Watching Netflix's Wednesday was especially a treat to Game of Thrones fans, who witnessed the impressive transformation of the fan favorite Gwendoline Christie from Westeros' Brienne of Tarth to Nevermore's principal Larissa Weems.
The 44-year-old British actress, who rose to fame for the HBO series, was almost unrecognizable with her polished blonde locks and bright red lip for the Addams Family spin-off. It was a glam makeover we couldn't have possibly imagined for the tough lady knight who once fought grizzly bears. So much so that, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gwendoline herself revealed that her character in Wednesday was in fact "the first time [she's] ever felt beautiful on screen."
In comparison to her GoT character who Gwendoline once said "wasn’t a conventionally attractive woman," Larissa Weems, the fearless lead of Nevermore Academy, always moved with poise and elegance. In preparation for the role, the actress shared that she even had to watch a bunch of classic Alfred Hitchcock films, which starred screen sirens like Tippi Hedren and Kim Novak. "Women in those movies would hold themselves with confidence and grace," she explained.
Another fun fact: Gwendoline was actually handpicked by director Tim Burton for the role, and he gave her full creative freedom to mold the character as she sees fit. "He said, 'You can do whatever you like with the character. Feel free to make it whatever you want and we'll keep talking about it,'" Gwendoline shared. "And that was an unbelievable opportunity from this great cinematic master."
"This idea kept coming to me of Larissa Weems being someone who was an outcast, who went to a school for outcasts, that was always second best and was always in Morticia's [Catherine Zeta-Jones] shadow," Christie said, explaining her creative process in developing her character for the series.
Given how her role has impacted the show, it was clearly a successful endeavor, which she credits to the amazing work of Wednesday's hair, makeup, and wardrobe department. "It is the first time I've ever felt beautiful on screen," Gwendoline admitted. "I cannot express my extreme gratitude more heartily to Tim and [costume designer] Colleen and our hair and makeup team. Colleen Atwood is rightfully a legend, and what she does is close to witchcraft in terms of transformation. It is an honor of my life to work with Colleen and to work with Tim."
We totally agree—you looked amazing, Gwendoline!
