If you think “You and me, we used to be together” were the saddest lines the singer and designer Gwen Stefani ever crooned, well, you’re wrong.
While performing in New York for MasterCard’s Priceless Surprises series, the No Doubt frontwoman debuted her heartbreaking new single “Used to Love You.” It is assumed to be a message for Gavin Rossdale, her ex-husband and the father of her three sons. Hitting the heartstrings hard with lyrics like “Nobody taught you how to love” and “I thought I was the best thing that ever happened to you,” the ballad makes absolute sense considering the painful divorce that she’s going through after 13 years of marital bliss. Ouch!
The couple filed for divorce in August, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. They do, however, continue to raise their kids (9-year-old Kingston, 7-year-old Zuma, and 1-year-old Apollo) together. They told US Weekly, “We remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment."
