Graduating college is no mean feat, and there’s no better way to document it than staging a creative shoot to be remembered for years to come! To mark her milestone, Elysse Corpuz, a BS Development Communication graduate of the University of the Philippines, decided to take a more sentimental route by recreating her grandmother’s vintage photoshoot from the ‘50s.
On Facebook, she wrote, “Para sa creative shot ko noong nagpa-grad pic ako, pinili kong gayahin yung studio photo ni lola in remembrance of her. Today, we remember her 4th year in heaven. Ang bilis ng panahon.” Albeit the photos were taken 68 years apart, the result is very uncanny!

“It was a moment of mixed emotions,” Elysse tells Preview. “Because, finally, I got to wear the proof of finishing my degree. But then I remember wanting my lola to see me wearing it… but she isn’t around anymore. I appeased myself by imagining that she’s actually rejoicing with me from above.”
In the original picture, her grandmother was wearing a Filipiniana gown—a traditional dress known for its puffy butterfly sleeves, notably worn by Filipinas back in the day. Luckily, Elysse didn’t have a hard time sourcing a similar frock, as her mom already owns a piece that closely resembles that of her abuela’s. Unlike the latter though, she kept her look minimal with zero accessories, merely sporting the signature warm smile that she totally got from her late grandmother.
Of course, the rest of the family couldn’t contain their happiness upon seeing the output. “When I finally showed them the printed photos, they wanted to have their own copies,” she shares.
And as for her lola, she hopes that she’s beaming with pride. “Siguro kung nabubuhay pa siya, una kong sasabihin sa kanya, in heavy Kapampangan accent, "Apu, siklod ku pu." (Bless me, grandma.) Tapos pag paalis na kami, "La, piksur ta pa." (Lola, let's take a picture.)
