It’s a mournful day for the fashion world. Criselda Lontok, a veteran fashion designer for luxury retail house Rustan's, passed away at 2:30 in the morning on September 22, Wednesday.
Criselda’s son, John Fernandez, confirmed the news of her demise in a Facebook post. He later told ABS-CBN News that the cause of her death was officially ruled as sepsis.
“It truly breaks my heart to announce the passing of the very first queen in my life, my mama, Criselda R. Lontok," he wrote. "God can be so full of surprises that I sometimes wonder why Mama?? But I have humbly learned to accept His will and respect the greater purpose of this very very sad moment in our family's lives. Thank you mama for the best that you have always given us through your unconditional love. This post proves how wonderful a person you truly are from all the friends that express their love for you. I love you and will miss you terribly! Now you are my queen angel.”
A former beauty queen and illustrious design icon, Criselda has been working with Rustan's for over 35 years. She was mentored by Gliceria Tantoco herself, who was the co-founder of Rustan's. Her name is deeply embedded in Manila’s high society as she has dressed some of the most fashionable and influential women with her RTW pieces that epitomize the very core of glamor and confidence. Her elegance and refined flair led her to become the top-selling designer for the department store's Ladies Private Label over the years. You'll know a Criselda Lontok piece by its fearless floral prints and bold colors—she truly had her way of rendering a distinctly Filipina touch in a glamorous, regal way.
Millet Martinez Mananquil expressed her grief for her dear friend’s passing on Facebook. She captioned, “You were a fashion maven, an iconic inspiration, a beautiful friend. I treasure every memory of you...Love you always, Crissy.”
People paid their condolences under Millet’s same commemoration post on Instagram. Some of these personalities include Karen Davila and Rajo Laurel.
Connie Araneta also expressed her sincerest sympathies for Criselda’s son, John. “I’m saddened to hear about your most gracious Mom, Criselda R. Lontok [emoji]. Take solace that she is now resting in peace with our Creator. My prayers to you for Strength, John,” she quotes.
She will forever be remembered for her dedication to her artistry and philosophy of timeless and elegant style, and, of course, as an inspiring friend and caring mother.
Rest in peace, Criselda.
