Less than a week since it hit the cinemas, Spider-Man: Brand New Day raked in more than half a billion gross in the Philippines. Its distributor, Columbia Pictures, announced that the film soared to a “phenomenal P587 million box office,” making it the biggest Spider-Man film in the country and the highest post-pandemic opening weekend.
It also broke records in the United States with its record-setting $360 million domestic debut (approximately P21,905,280,000), surpassing Avengers: Endgame. Sony and Marvel’s fourth comic-book adventure led by Tom Holland remarkably launched to a heroic $932 million globally (approximately P56,710,336,000), a benchmark that few films achieve—and one that reflects just how much people have been anticipating the return of the friendly neighbor.
Any Marvel fan would agree that the film wouldn’t have been possible without every single person whose name appears in the credits. In this film, did you know that two of them are Filipino?
Two Filipino Comic Book Artists Contributed to the Spider-Verse
The audiences of Marvel films often stay glued to their seats as the credits roll, patiently waiting for a short clip that gives a glimpse of what’s next for the franchise. It also serves as the perfect time to appreciate the hundreds of people who contributed to the film that they had just seen.
Two globally renowned Filipino creatives are named in the “Special Thanks” of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, namely, Leinil Francis Yu and Stephen Segovia.

Esquire Philippines reported that Leinil has worked on various Spider-Man arcs, including the Spider-Man Brand New Day Yearbook released in 2008. The comic book artist has also worked on a variant cover of The Amazing Spider-Man No. 792 and Edge of Spider-Verse No. 1, and served as the cover artist of Symbiote Spider-Man 2099 No. 1. He has been directly involved in expanding the Spider-Verse, which is central to its animation and live-action adaptations.
Leinil has contributed to several high-profile Marvel runs, too, such as X-Men, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Secret Invasion (where he also helped design Marvel’s first Filipina superhero, Wave).
Like Leinil, Stephen is a comic book artist. His work on numerous Marvel titles, like New Avengers, frequently intersects with Spider-Man in the adaptations. Stephen also has an associated credit listing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day Omnibus Vol. 2.
Beyond the Spider-Verse, he has worked on titles such as Black Widow & Hawkeye: Broken Arrow, Captain Marvel, X-Force, Dark X-Men, and Moon Knight.
