Drive-in cinemas are having a revival thanks to the new normal. The first drive-in cinema in the Philippines in decades is making its comeback on July 31 at the SM Pampanga Ampitheater.

Without having to leave your car, you can enjoy going to the cinema again while complying with social distancing. And you don’t have to be cramped inside a closed room with strangers for two hours.

The drive-in cinema, called Movies at Sundown, will happen from Fridays to Sundays at 5:30 p.m. and 8:20 p.m. The entry fee is P400, inclusive of popcorn, water, and even a side of beef franks. A maximum of four people are allowed inside a vehicle, but for the best view, stick to just two.

The comeback of drive-in cinemas is another way people are adjusting to the post-pandemic world, and it’s giving us a chance to experience watching films the way our grandparents used to in the good ol’ days. Perhaps for the seniors who attend, it’ll also offer them a taste of nostalgia.

In other countries, the drive-in cinema industry is already thriving due to quarantines and social distancing protocols. And now in the Philippines, it can finally get started.

The experience certainly won’t be the same as going to an actual cinema. The screen might not be as sharp, the view from the car might not be ideal, and then there’s the worry of a storm brewing. But if this is one way to keep the film industry alive, then we’re all for it.

Now it’s just a matter of getting the best parking spot.
