The renaissance of the teen movie is upon us. At least, we hope it is.
Every so often, the film side of Twitter is hit with heavy nostalgia, where movies once branded as “chick flicks” get their days in the spotlight once again–think along the lines of Clueless, Legally Blonde, She’s All That, and Bring It On. Be it the result of '90s wistfulness, embracing the cringe, or the internet realizing that shaming this genre is likely rooted in misogyny (finally!), teen movies are indubitably cool again. And, it seems, modern Hollywood is also catching up.
If anyone wants hard proof, then hover over one of Netflix’s latest offerings, Do Revenge. After taking the Top 1 movie spot just as quickly as it was released, we got curious. Is it worth the watch? Read on as we dish the info.

The Plot
On the throne of a cutthroat private posh school Rosehill Country Day sits its alpha Drea Torres (Camila Mendes), the local It girl who has the campus in the palm of her dainty, manicured hand. Just as she’s on the verge of bagging her sought-after Ivy League scholarship, Drea’s fall from grace comes when her explicit video gets leaked to the whole school. The primary suspect? Her now ex-boyfriend and campus king Max (Austin Abrams).

With her reputation and relationship in tatters, Drea finds an unlikely friend in transfer student Eleanor (Maya Hawke), the awkward new gal who discovers that her former bully Carissa (Ava Capri) is her classmate once again. As Drea and Eleanor air out their frustrations, they realize that the best way to solve them is with the help of their new friend a.k.a. each other—by getting revenge, that is.
The Cast
Several familiar names line up Do Revenge’s credits, top-billed by Riverdale’s Camila Mendes as fallen queen bee Drea, and Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke as new kid Eleanor.

Austin Abrams of Paper Towns (2015) and Dash and Lily (2020) fame plays the campus flirt (and potentially conniving) Max. Elsewhere in the cast list are Rish Shah, Talia Ryder, Alisha Boe, Ava Capri, J.D., Paris Berelc, and Maia Reficco. Game of Thrones’ very own Queen of The North Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark, if that rings a bell!) also stars as student Erica, while the film echoes its '90s roots with Sarah Michelle Gellar (Cruel Intentions, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Rosehill Country Day’s hip headmaster. No surprise here!

The consensus? Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke’s chemistry is a vital chunk of the thriving Do Revenge mix. For viewers, the film’s soundtrack (which, by the way, includes Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish hits!), costume design, and ambitious twists and turns complement the callbacks to pop culture’s past, all the while staying fresh in the eyes of a new generation.
What the Critics Are Saying
With an 85 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Do Revenge is certainly best served fresh. MovieFreak.com’s Sara Michelle Fetters notes the film’s influences with predecessors Cruel Intentions and Mean Girls, but now made more “subversive” and “foul-mouthed.”
Jude Dry of IndieWire relates the movie to the teens of today existing amid chaos—in his words, a world “hell-bent on driving humanity off a cliff”—who seek a bit of the same revenge, with Netflix’s latest film the “clever entertainment” along for the long, long ride.
