Moms who frequent Taft’s community pantry were in for a treat last May 9 as their usual trip for aid that day was met with extra special gifts.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, organizers of De La Salle’s Dude, Pantry, Chong—The Taft Times Community Pantry gave 100 lucky mothers food and drink from three brands well loved by LaSallians, in addition to their usual bags of groceries. This included sponsored pastries from Becky’s Kitchen, burgers from Brothers Burgers, and coffee from Starbucks. Yep, you read that right. Anyone else suddenly craving for free SB?

Apart from the mothers, 200 other beneficiaries received bags filled with products from Purefoods, items donated by The Taft Initiative, sanitizers, loaves of bread, rice, and vegetables. All this was also accompanied by a song and dance number to serenade the moms that passed by!

"Truly a MOTHER’S DAY Community pantry like no other!” wrote Martin Cervantes, one of the pantry’s organizers, on Facebook. "You are just a whole lot of LOVE La Salle, from the serenade and dance, to camaraderie and generosity - we are extremely GRATEFUL."

While the pantry’s unique event was lauded on social media, most users couldn’t help but be amused at the” bougie” items that were generously given away that day. “Nawindang ako sa pa Starbucks…” one tweet read. Someone else commented, “PWEDE BA DUMAAN MAKIKIKAPE LANG???

Organized by students, alumni, and employees of the university, La Salle’s Dude, Pantry, Chong Community Pantry all started out, believe or not, from an internet meme. “In the photo, a community pantry was superimposed in front of De La Salle University (DLSU) and the caption imagined that products like Kirkland strawberries and Ritz were being given away,” recalled Martin for Lifestyle Inquirer.

He then posted the said meme to another group named A Group Where We All Pretend to Be in Taft, which thankfully consisted of thousands of member who were more than willing to turn the photo into reality.

“‘Dude, Pantry, Chong’—The Taft Times Community Pantry was born three days after I lifted the meme. The name shows just how organic everything is," wrote Martin. "It came from the Lasallian community, showing that we keep things tongue-in-cheek and that we can laugh at ourselves. Even in ‘Taft times,’ we don’t lose our sense of humor. Not only that, we step into action, too.”
