Inspired by these, we reached out to the best of the best: Gideon Hermosa, Randy Lazaro, Teddy Manuel, and Dave Sandoval, for tips on how to style our own chic at-home soirees. We may not be able to physically travel far right now, but we’d definitely go the distance in conceptualizing memorable affairs, albeit on a more intimate scale.

Below, we list down eight tips for styling at home events from event stylists:

1. Before anything, don fresh eyes and do an ocular of your home.

Gideon: “People tend to overlook identifying a focal area of their home. There are instances that it's best to dress up and maximize other parts of the house aside from the usual living and dining room area. They can check the styling possibility of using their lanai, veranda, or staircase for their at-home affairs.”

2. Work with your space, not against it.

Dave: “Work with the intrinsic structure of your venue. Don't go for drastic transformation because that will require too much effort. Instead, highlight the aesthetic of your home.”

3. More than your pegs, it’s your personality that will count most.

Randy: “The web offers limitless possibilities. It is a gift and a curse. Make sure to figure out when to stop and to just stick to what the occasion requires. Try to remain original and insert pieces of yourself. Remember, pegs should stay as such—inspirations. Otherwise, it will leave you entirely uninspired and all over the place.”

4. If you don’t know how to start, focus on your tablescape.

Teddy: “Celebrating at home is usually centered on food and dining. The best way to start is your table setup. Look for the items you have, and compliment it with a floral centerpiece. Slowly add layers and details, like placemats or charger plates, napkins and mood lighting. Candles can easily change the mood, and makes the dining experience more intimate. LED candles are also a good option. Fresh flowers take it to the next level. It makes the experience more special.”

5. Know when to take a step back.

Randy: “In styling, the rule of thumb is to be cohesive. While it is fun to experiment and be wild about it, one should have the necessary restraint to pull back from the styling trance.”

6. Be creative and check your existing items.

Teddy: “People have the tendency to spend, but you can actually cut costs by looking at existing items. Be creative with chargers, and flowers can be substituted with leaves or other items.”

7. Natural light will do wonders for your photos.

Gideon: “We all want a good set of photos for our celebrations and some forget to consider the advantages of having a good source of natural light as it has a big impact on photos. They can also consider adjusting the photoshoot time so they can enjoy it with natural light before they start the festivities.”

8. Great visuals are nothing without a pleasant experience.

Randy: “When designing our homes, we tend to focus on what we see online. The purpose, the space, and even the occasion itself then become an afterthought. Instead, we fill the Pinterest boards with photos of crazy over-the-top designs that will prove to be a source of frustration later on because it will never work out. For example, people often overlook the weather after setting up an outdoor tablescape with lights because it looks cute in photos; or going for benches without realizing that the guests will be all seniors who cannot stand an hour sitting without a backrest or with utter discomfort. It is essential to consider all facets rather than just looking at one surface— the look. Styling does not start and end with aesthetics. It should come from intentionality, the celebration itself, the space, and the people who will grace the occasion.”
