Disney's much-anticipated live-action remake, Mulan, just dropped its first trailer and it gives us a first glimpse of how the film will look like before its theater release, slated in March 2020.

Prior to the trailer release, the film had been surrounded a slew of alleged departures from the original 1998 animated film. This includes the absence of Mulan's wise yet loud-mouthed dragon sidekick, Mushu, as well as the singing general Li Shang. But what fans are most concerned about is director Niki Caro's ditching of the film's iconic songs.

However, as we watched the trailer, we can confirm that Mulan's beloved songs will still be in the film—just in instrumental versions. By going this route, the filmmakers are giving Hua Mulan's story a grittier, organic, and more serious approach to the telling of a legendary Chinese warrior's story. Perhaps, the remake will focus more on prioritizing the cultural importance of the Hua Mulan Ballad over treating fans to a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
