In times of trouble, it doesn’t take long before Filipinos gather to help those in need and showcase the bayanihan spirit. But this COVID-19 pandemic is a totally different case, as the health risks make it harder for anyone to extend their reach to others.
That’s why whenever we see charitable efforts by our fellowmen, we salute them for all their hard work and sheer determination.
As for our local celebrities, it’s heartwarming to see them use their influence to spark hope amid these desperate unprecedented times. These stars have done so in various ways, such as fundraisers, feeding programs, and donation drives for frontliners and underprivileged families.
Here are all the celebrities we’ve spotted lending a helping hand in their own way so far:
1. Catriona Gray
In partnership with non-government organization Young Focus PH, Catriona Gray set up a donation drive to feed families located in the Smokey Mountain. As of April 2, they have raised $20,000 (approximately P1,013,510.00) and has distributed meals to 790 families with more on the way.
2. Bea Alonzo
Just yesterday, Bea Alonzo assisted the first face mask packing day of organization I Am Hope PH. “Maliit na tulong ito kumpara sa ginagawa para sa atin ng ating magigiting na frontliners!” she said in the photo’s caption.
3. Angel Locsin
The real-life Darna never fails to give back to the community when crises strike, and this pandemic is no exception. Along with fiancé Neil Arce and wedding coordinator La Belle Fete, she has been spearheading an initiative that aims to provide sleeping tents for healthcare workers in hospitals in Taguig City.
4. Bela Padilla
Last March 16, Bela Padilla set up a GoGetFunding page to help feed food vendors. Her initiative has raised 3.3 million, and she even personally oversaw the distribution of these goods as well. Learn more about the story behind her efforts here.
5. Kathryn Bernardo
The Teen Queen is known for her warm, down-to-earth personality, so it came as no surprise when she kept her food donation drives under wraps. We discovered that she had been sending meals to frontliners in numerous hospitals!
6. Gabbi Garcia and Khalil Ramos
On- and offscreen love team Gabbi and Khalil started a fundraising effort to provide PPEs and meals to Ospital ng Parañaque and Pasay City General Hospital. They raised their goal of P300,000 in a span of two days.
7. Julia Barretto
Julia Barretto, along with her sisters Claudia and Dani, recently announced that they set up a GoGetFunding page to raise funds in partnership with WTA Design Studio to build an Emergency Quarantine Facility. This will address the overcrowding problem in hospitals due to the rising number of COVID-19 patients.
8. Maine Mendoza
Maine Mendoza is low-key about her fundraising initiative but she has already raised P587,677.92 as of last week. These funds will provide meals to families who need financial support.
9. Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes
Last April 2, Dingdong Dantes posted photos of wife Marian Rivera cooking up delicious-looking meals. He shared that it was their little way of helping frontliners. The meals were distributed to the healthcare workers of Quezon City General Hospital.
10. KC Concepcion
Another celebrity who aims to feed Filipinos in need of sustenance, KC Concepcion was able to donate 500 kilos of rice to indigent families and provided meals for the frontliners of Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City and Perpetual Help Medical Center in Las Piñas City.
11. Lea Salonga
Broadway legend and The Voice judge Lea Salonga is using her gift of song to raise funds for those in need. Last April 2, she joined “Bayanihan Musikahan,” an online concert series helmed by Ryan Cayabyab. Her concert night raised P1,777,874.
12. Kim Chiu
Last week, Kim Chiu proved that you don’t need to go beyond your own home to be of service. She organized her own relief goods operations and was able to provide for 500 families located in nearby barangays.
