Fashion designer Mak Tumang recreated his masterpiece down to a tee!

Two years after its announcement, Catriona Gray’s wax figure for Madame Tussauds Singapore is finally here! This makes her the third Filipino to be recognized by the famed London-based museum, and the first Pinoy to grace the hallowed halls of its Singapore branch.

In an interview with Preview, the beauty queen revealed that she’d been told of the wax figure as early as 2019 during her Miss Universe reign. “I was super surprised. For some reason I didn’t feel like I would ever be on a platform like that,” admitted Catriona. “When I was younger and I visited Madame Tussauds, I would see Hollywood actors or iconic historical figures, so I just associated it with that level of celebrity or influence. But to think that I would have my own wax figure is really just the craziest thing to me.”

Catriona has always taken pride in representing Filipino culture through her work as a beauty queen and beyond, and that still holds true even for this personal milestone. She explains, “I really take the time to tell stories about the Philippines whether through [my clothes] or the different media I put out. It gives me a lot of pride to be able to bring people along with my journey, and I think this is an accumulation of that.”

In particular, her wax figure is dressed up in an almost exact replica of the iconic red gown she had on during her crowning moment in 2018. To achieve the look, Madame Tussauds teamed up with the frock’s original designer, Mak Tumang, as they recreated her whole outfit down to a tee, from the placement of the stones on the Mayon Volcano-inspired dress, to her memorable statement earcuff, and even her shoes!

“It’s just exciting that not only do people get to see me, but they also get to appreciate the Filipino talents that went into creating this look that ultimately allowed me to win Miss Universe,” Catriona tells Preview. “Because honestly, I feel like I never would have gotten there if not for the support of my team. So it’s really a wonderful thing to elevate them alongside me.”

Catriona’s wax figure will be displayed in Madame Tussauds Singapore for the next six months. Apart from viewing her, fans can also channel their inner beauty queen and recreate her show-stopping Lava Walk with the help of a tutorial from the queen herself through a 90-second video that’s being flashed right beside the figure.

As per Madame Tussauds, the figure will soon be transferred to their Hong Kong branch to join the wax figures of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao

FYI, fully-vaccinated Filipino tourists can now visit Singapore through the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) program. Upon arrival, travelers are required to present proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test result, and travel insurance.
