Dreaming of visiting the famed Land of the Maple Leaf? That fantasy just got a whole lot more accessible, as Canada has officially unveiled its visa-free program for Filipinos–but with a catch!

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada Sean Fraser announced the addition of 13 countries for its electronic travel authorization (eTA) program, starting June 7, 2023. Among the nations includes is the Philippines, which grants Philippine passport holders permission to stay in Canada for up to six months for either business or pleasure.

However, the new provision comes with a few conditions. Those eligible for the program must have held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years, or are currently holding a valid United States non-immigrant visa. Visitors who will transit to Canada other than through air travel (such as car, bus, train, and boat/cruise ship) aren’t eligible, and must secure a visitor visa instead.

Those who already hold a valid Canadian visa may still use it as usual without requiring an eTA.

What You Need When Applying for Canada’s Electronic Travel Authorization

Applying for an eTA costs $7 CAD, or approximately P290. According to its official website, applications may be approved within minutes. Some requests may also take several days to process, if asked to submit supporting documents.

Applicants must have a valid passport, email, and credit or debit card for the payment of the application fee.
