The prime time for skygazing is fast arriving! Starting Tuesday, April 7, at 6:28 in the evening, this year's biggest and brightest moon will be gracing the sky. The supermoon will be at its closest to earth the following morning, on Wednesday, April 8, 10:35 a.m. It will still be visible in the daylight.
According to Forbes, the best place to view the moonrise of the supermoon is from an east-facing second floor balcony or higher. If you're quarantined in an apartment with only a west-facing window, worry not! You'll likely be able to see it the next morning.
Despite its name, the supermoon will not be pink: This moniker was coined due to the coincidental bloom of pink wildflowers in North America called phlox subulate, which came to be associated with the rise of the April full moon. Expect it to be a brilliant gold, notably brighter than the usual full moon.
A supermoon takes place when the moon's elliptical orbit brings it it much closer to the earth than usual. On April 7, it is estimated to orbit some 221,772 miles from our planet, which is closer than it was during the last two full moons. The next supermoon will occur on May 7, the fourth and last supermoon of 2020.
