It's safe to say we're officially jealous of all you incoming Fine Arts freshmen, because the Ateneo de Manila University is opening the doors to its enormous, brand-new creative hub The Arete in September 2017!
The Arete, composed of two main wings and a connecting bridgeway, will play new three-storey home to the Ateneo Art Gallery, plus house a state-of-the-art 900-seat performance hall, dance and photo studios, as well as learning spaces created for the fine arts disciplines. Whew!
Also, the first floor of the Learning Innovation Wing will be dedicated to the prestigious Ateneo-Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute, set to introduce the field of Restaurant Entrepreneurship to the Ateneo community.
Of The Arete, Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Jett Villarin muses, "I have been asked numerous times why we chose this name. Well, we resonate with what it stands for excellence, goodness, virtue. No English word or phrase quite captures the exact meaning of this Greek word. The nearest equivalents are 'excellence' and 'virtue'. Both Plato and Aristotle espoused this notion of excellence that is ultimately tied to the fulfillment of purpose or function: the act of living up to one's full potential. This, along with the Ignatian magis, is precisely the spirit we hope to nurture and cultivate in this new complex."
