You may have heard of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, now it’s time for Mean Girls: The Musical: The Movie! Okay, so that’s not the official title, but you get the gist. The broadway adaptation of Tina Fey’s 2004 pop cult film Mean Girls is hitting the big screen once again!
The Mean Girls Broadway Twitter account announced the news on their official page, writing "A #MeanGirlsBway movie based on the #MeanGirlsBway musical that's based on the #MeanGirls movie,” with an aptly used mind-blown emoji to top it all off.
“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Tina said in a statement. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe, and I love them dearly."
After writing and appearing in the original Mean Girls, Tina’s also set to produce and pen this film, while incorporating the musical’s original Tony-nominated score by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin.
Mean Girls was adapted into a musical back in October 2017 when it first debuted at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. The reported movie may not be a sequel (one was already made in 2011 and we’ve promptly erased it from our memories) but we can’t wait to see how this one will fare from the original, apart from the musical numbers, of course.
While there’s no word yet on who’ll be singing and dancing to the tune of Regina George and the Plastics, who would you cast for the Mean Girls: The Musical: The Movie?
