We don't know about you, but we can't think of the name Anne Hathaway without automatically being reminded of Andrea Sachs, too! The actress flawlessly brought the fictional character to life and The Devil Wears Prada would not have been the same without her iconic portrayal. Which is why, it definitely came as a shock when we recently discovered that Anne was not the first, not the second, and not even the third choice for the role—in fact, she was the ninth! Yup, you read that right.

Last February 19, during a guest appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race, the Hollywood star was asked by contestant Rosé about the roles she had to “fight tooth and nail” for in order to land the part. To which, Anne humorously replied: "How much time do you have? A lot of them!"
“I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada," Anne disclosed, surprising everyone with her revelation. "But I got it! Hang in there! Never give up!”
It was in 2016 when Anne first spoke about not being the original choice for the role of Andy Sachs. In an interview with Variety, she revealed that while she didn't have to audition, the offer didn't simply land in her lap either. "I had to be patient. I wasn’t the first choice," she said, adding how thrilled she was when she finally got a call from her agent. "I was putting on a shirt. I had some buddies over. I remember running out in my living room, half dressed, screaming—'I got The Devil Wears Prada! I got The Devil Wears Prada!'"

Fun fact: 20th Century Fox wanted a big movie star to play Andy and initially pursued Rachel McAdams, who back then already top-billed The Notebook and Mean Girls. The actress declined it multiple times—"I'm not going to make movies just to make movies," she told Elle Magazine in 2007.
In the end, everything worked out for the best. Anne got the job a million girls would kill for, The Devil Wears Prada dominated the box office and raked in $327.9 million worldwide, and the rest was history. That's all.
