Alex Eala Has Just Made Tennis History at Wimbledon

Tennis fans have been rejoicing around the world because Alex Eala has just made tennis history! After beating Polish player Iga Swiatek, who is the reigning Wimbledon women's champion and currently ranks third in women's singles worldwide, Alex became the first Filipina to reach the third round at a Grand Slam at the Open Era.

With this feat, Alex scores her seventh career Top 10 win. In addition to being the first Filipina to reach the third round of a Grand Slam, Alex is now the first tennis player from the Philippines to advance to the second week of a major. All of these came after sixteen months of entering the tennis world.

During the on-court interview that took place right afte her win, Alex talked about how much the victory means to her. She also referenced her younger self and gave everyone a glimpse of her tennis journey growing up.

"Maybe for someone like Iga, who's won so many Slams, or maybe for someone like Serena or Venus, this achievement may seem small. But for someone who grew up in the Philippines -- I went to train with my brother and my grandfather every day after school, with my ruffled socks and light-up shoes and chubby cheeks, so to her this is everything."

In another interview, Alex touched on the Filipino culture when it comes to supporting fellow countrymen on the global stage. "I think we are just very proud of where we come from and we have a really strong sense of community. You can see it when someone does well. We're a community that uplifts each other... When positive things happen to other Filipinos around the world, I think we just share the enjoyment and share in the happiness."
