The Plot

Set in the fictional nation of Daeho, Alchemy of Souls follows Jang Wook, a mischievous troublemaker from a noble family. While it might seem like he has it all, Jang Wook is perpetually haunted by his tragic past that’s caused his countrymen to incessantly gossip about the circumstances of his birth. His life changes when fate brings him to Naksu, an elite warrior whose soul is trapped inside the weak body of Mu Deok-yi. Now relegated to working as Jang Wook’s servant, Deok-yi teaches him how to fight, in exchange for something she needs.

The Cast

Rising K-drama leading man Lee Jae Wook top bill’s the drama as Jang Wook, a sophisticated young noble plagued by his complicated past. The series marks Jae Wook’s second lead role after his 2020 rom-com Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. You might also know him from Extraordinary You, When the Weather Is Fine, Search: WWW, and his cameo appearance in True Beauty.

Seasoned actress Jung So Min stars opposite Jae Wook as Mu Deok-yi. So Min debuted in 2010, but she’s best known for her performance in the 2018 drama The Smile Has Left Your Eyes. Her more recent works include Monthly Magazine Home and Soul Mechanic.

K-pop idol and NU’EST member Hwang Minhyun plays Seo Yul in the drama. Described as a “genius scion” from a noble family, his brilliance proves useless in love as he harbors a hopeless passion for a still unnamed girl.

The Crew

Alchemy of Souls has quite the dream team on deck. Its director, Park Joon Hwa, previously helmed beloved hits like Touch Your Heart, What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, and Because This Is My First Life. Meanwhile, the script was penned by the famous Hong Sisters (Hong Mi Ran and Hong Jung Eun), who are known masters of the fantasy genre. ICYDK, they’re also the brains behind Hotel del Luna, A Korean Odyssey, The Master’s Sun, and My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho.
