You'd think travels abroad are all about exploring everything and anything that contrasts greatly from our own. But it's not uncommon to yearn for a taste of home at times—and when in San Francisco, contemporary Filipino spot Abacá is the place to go!
They've been lauded a number of accolades over the years (including being named one of Esquire U.S.' 2021 Best New Restaurants in America), and to add to their recognition roster, they were recently hailed by no less than the New York Times as part of the 2022 edition of the publication's annual Restaurant List!
Filipino restaurant Abacá is among the restaurants the New York Times is most excited about this year:
The Chef Francis and Dian Ang-owned restaurant takes on Filipino classics in a way that highlights traditional family recipes, while using local, seasonal ingredients that showcase the best of Northern California. In the Restaurant List—which aims to cover the places in America they're "most excited about"—the New York Times praises Abacá's way of making "every dinner feel like a party". And by that, they refer to one where there's plenty of pancit, lumpia, longganisa, and "habit-forming" sticks of beef-tongue barbecue to go around, of course.
This isn't the first time a Filipino restaurant has caught the eye of the renowned publication; just last year, Archipelago in Seattle and Kasama in Chicago similarly made it to the New York Times' 2021 Restaurant List. And we say celebrate all those accomplishments. Filipino food, after all, deserves to shine!
