Flatlays are essentially carefully constructed stories pieced together with perfectly placed elements to fit in a frame. It’s addicting and rewarding if done right, but takes grueling hours to master the craft. To help you out, we’ve listed five tips you can keep in mind as you strive to capture that inspired flatlay photo.
1. Enhance with texture
While white or single-colored backgrounds can steer your Instagram feed into a minimalist and clean direction, they can also be monotonous and repetitive. Add some depth to your photo by laying your favorite products over textured backgrounds like marble, a duvet, or faux fur.
2. Add a human element
Show your audience just how involved you are in that picture you've created, or that you’re actually eating that foodstagram you just took. It can even be your chance to show off your freshly manicured nails!
3. Plan with a palette in mind
If you’re carefully curating your IG feed, then it’s best to compose your photos with objects that complement each other. You can go monochromatic, contrasting, or just have an accent color.
4. Add some whimsical elements
We believe that another way to take your OOTD is through a flatlay. But clothes, shoes and bags could look boring and unoriginal. Add some interesting elements like jewelry, magazines, flowers, or even your favorite pet!
5. Show what’s inside your bag
Here’s an interesting way to show what you’re carrying in your purse for the day. Try to incorporate a harmonious color scheme that will revolve around your bag.
Pro tip: It’s best to be a bit elevated when you take a top shot for your flatlays. Use a step stool to complete the task but be careful!
