There are countless things to include in your bucket list when visiting South Korea. But apart from the obvious (shopping for beauty products at Myeongdong, trying on the traditional hanbok costume, indulging in street food, et al.), there’s one other thing that some travel blogs forget to mention—café hopping!
Seoul is literally brimming with coffee shops; everywhere you turn to, there will most likely be a quaint little café guaranteed to snag a coffeeholic’s attention. And if you think cat and dog cafés are cute, lo and behold, these ones will surely make you swoon. Below, the five must-visit themed cafes to include in your itinerary:
1. Ddong Poop Café
Only in Korea would you find a café as quirky as this poop-themed place in the heart of Insadong! Who would’ve thought that one could actually make a business out of poop-shaped pastries and lattes served in toilet mugs? Inside the coffee shop, you’ll also find a tree decorated with colorful papers cut out in the shape of—yup, you guessed it—more poop. It’s also just a short walk away from Gyeongbokgung Palace, so a quick visit here should be fairly easy to squeeze into your itinerary.
P.S. Outside the café, you can also find a stall that sells poop-shaped bread filled with either chocolate or red bean. It’s pretty good for only KRW 1000!
Location: 4F Ssamziegil Complex, Insadong
2. Thanks Nature Café a.k.a. Sheep Café
This café has actual sheep roaming around the place, two to be exact. Although I didn’t get the chance to see them when I dropped by last week (the barista told me it was their bath time. Boo, I know!), I heard that the visitors can normally pet them, feed them, and take pictures with them. The owner takes pretty good care of these sheep, so both are well-groomed and tourist-friendly.
Location: 486 Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu
3. Zoo Café
Zoo Café is a successful chain of coffee shops in Seoul. Unlike Thanks Nature Café though, they don’t house actual pets inside the place. They do, however, feature oversized stuff animals and jungle-themed interiors. If you ever decide to pay Zoo Café a visit, make sure to order their best-selling creamy white hot chocolate. It’s the best, I tell you!
Location: We went to the one near Hongdae subway station, but they also have other branches scattered all around Seoul.
4. Hello Kitty Café

I’m not exactly a fan of Hello Kitty so this wasn’t on top of my priority list during my trip to Seoul, but if this Sanrio character is your cup of tea, then this place is surely right up your alley! A kawaii haven that will turn all your feline fantasies into reality, this two-floor coffee shop features bright pink seats, adorable coffee art, desserts and souvenirs that are all Hello Kitty-inspired.
Location: 18 Wausan-ro 19-gil, Mapo-gu
5. Monster Cupcakes Café

Halloween happens all year round inside this spooky little café in Itaewon. From severed fingers to bloody eyeballs, this tiny space offers devilishly sweet treats that are almost too scary to eat. If you’re a big fan of horror flicks, then this place is totally to-die-for! Pun intended.
Location: 305-7 Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu
