5 Helpful Tips for Girls Traveling Alone Your safety is always of utmost importance.

There is nothing more liberating than to travel alone. Exploring cities and traveling the globe are some of the best experiences you can have in your lifetime. Here are basic tips for women traveling alone to make sure you get the best out of your trip, whether you're planning a sojourn locally or abroad.

1.    Give someone your itinerary.

This is especially important if you are traveling somewhere far. Because you’ll be alone on your trip, it would help if people back home have a rough idea of where you’ll be every day. A detailed itinerary with space to diverge from your plans is the best option as it allows you to still be able to explore while giving your loved ones a virtual map of your whereabouts in case of emergencies.

2.    Have your tools on the ready.

In the event that you run into some trouble and you aren’t in the shape to fight or to defend yourself, having some handy tools can take you a long way. Essentials include a whistle (the higher-pitched the better), pepper spray, and a Taser. All are portable and easy to carry. Make sure that you can effortlessly grab them from your pocket or bag.

3.    Learn to S.I.N.G.

Take your cue from the movie Miss Congeniality and learn from Sandra Bullock’s character as she performs a self-defense demo for the talent portion of the Miss United States beauty pageant. S.i.n.g. stands for the four places you should target if someone attacks you from behind: “s” for solar plexus, “i" for instep (foot), “n” for nose, and “g” for groin.

4.    Don’t keep your money and important documents in one place.

Leaving your money in a single place can be detrimental if you’re traveling since you won’t have any backups. Try to separate them into at least three spots so that if you fall victim to pickpocketing or someone steals from your hotel room, you’ll have some cash left. Also take pictures of all your documents and have them ready to download on sites like DropBox or Google Drive. Send a copy to your email as well so that you’ll have something to use in case of emergencies.

5.    Have fun and work it.

Although most of the items on this list are to keep you safe, always remember that the point of the trip is to have fun. Come prepared, but don’t be a worrywart. If you are smart and alert, you can use your kickass brain and find clever ways to get out of a sticky situation or solve problems that may occur on your trip. You are your best asset, so be confident and enjoy yourself. That’s the whole reason you’re traveling alone anyway, right?

Additional tip: Like trying to find eco-friendly hotels, it is possible to find hotels that cater to women traveling alone or with other women. An example is Citadines Salcedo Makati, where they have a special Ladies Floor for the modern lady traveler.
