Whenever we hear the word Binondo, we tend to immediately think about authentic Chinese cuisine. That said, a posh café situated along the busy streets of Chinatown is not exactly the first thing that comes to mind.
But the 1919 Grand Cafe, owned by a food-loving Chinese businessman, has given fine dining a whole new meaning by taking his customers on a journey to the past. This café will be your new favorite go-to if you enjoy good food and coffee, plus a serene ambiance with a sprinkling of history.
Formerly an HSBC bank, the century-old establishment was revived as a one-stop place for people who don't want to go too far away from Manila to experience specialty coffee and food.
They've redecorated the interiors but mostly kept the historical elements intact, adding to the café's charm.
1919 Grand Cafe serves third wave coffee; imported and locally-sourced beans are roasted in front of you for a unique coffee experience.
As for the food, they offer a variety of meal options from around the world—from Chinese to American to Italian.
If you're visiting for the first time, they recommend you order their house specials like the steaks and their seafood pizza.
They only have one branch in Binondo right now, but they have plans to expand in upscale areas like BGC, Makati, and Podium in the near future.
