Whether you watch RuPaul's Drag Race or not, you've probably already heard of the name Aquaria, a.k.a the reality show's 10th season winner. Doesn't her name alone sound like it deserves a spotlight of its own? Fresh, fierce and, fun, this sassy drag queen was just announced as the newest face of The SM Store.
For those who aren't all too familiar with her, or the fabulous world of drag, below are 10 things you should know about Aquaria:
1. Her drag name originated from her zodiac sign.
Born Giovanni Palandrani on February 12, 1996, the trained dancer found her calling in drag at a young age and soon created her drag persona named Aquaria. To put it simply, her stage name was taken from her zodiac sign, Aquarius. Funnily enough, the now-famous moniker wasn't meant to be taken seriously at first as it came from a long list of possible "ridiculous and humorous" drag names that Giovanni and her childhood friend Heather Guyer came up with.
2. She was the youngest winnner of RuPaul's Drag Race.
Having snatched the crown at the young age of 22, Aquaria's considered the youngest winner of RuPaul's Drag Race, winning its 10th season. The now-successful drag queen thrived in the competition under the mentorship of her drag mother and Season 4 winner Sharon Needles.
3. She's also a model.
A natural at striking poses, Aquaria was signed by IMG Models back in 2018, the same company representing Cara Delevigne, Gigi Hadid, Barbara Palvin, and Karlie Kloss. She has since then modeled for the H&M x Moschino collaboration, and has appeared on prominent magazine spreads including Vogue, Vogue Italia, W, and Paper Magazine.
4. She was the first drag queen to walk the MET Gala.
Ever the show-stopper, Aquaria recently made history at this year's MET Gala by being the first drag queen to walk the iconic fashion event's pink carpet. She graced the event donning a black ribbon gown by designer John Galliano, and completed her look with a white painted wig, bedazzled claws, and eccentric lime-green eyeshadow. Her appperance was followed moments later by fellow Drag Race winner Violet Chachki in Moschino, and RuPaul himself.
5. She's a magazine editor.
Known for her fierce makeup looks, Aquaria's talents aren't just for show. Her RuPaul win opened a floodgate of opportunities, including becoming a guest contributor for British magazine Dazed's beauty section as its Entertainment Editor. Catch her teaching her subjects how to serve looks on their site, including a How to Look Like Virgin Mary makeup tutorial—because why not?
6. Her main inspirations include Lady Gaga and Madonna
If her exuberant costumes and fierce onstage personality haven't given it away yet, Aquaria mainly draws inspiration from two of this era's supreme pop icons, Madonna and Lady Gaga. In fact, her official bio for IMG states that she sees herself as a cross between both stars, especially when it comes to her fashion sense.
7. She used to study fashion.
Before turning into the glamorous queen that she is now, Aquaria actually considered a different path as a designer. She took up women's wear design at the Fashion Institue of Technology, only lasting two semesters before diving head- and heart-first into her true calling.
8. She's a strong advocate for the LGBT community.
Aquaria has always been vocal about fighting for inclusivity for the queer community, especially in media. Back in 2018, she notably publically called out rapper Travis Scott after the singer removed transgender model Amanda Lepore from the artwork of his third album, Astroworld. Travis responded with a seemingly half-hearted ingenuine apology, of which Aquaria considered as a measly "apologist mad lib."
9. She likes to mix and match high and low brands.
While she's obviously more fabulous than the rest of us, Aquaria's not all strictly luxurious glitz and glam. At her recent presscon to unveil a collection of fashion pieces in collaboration with the SM Store, Aquaria revealed that she's actually one for mixing high and low brands, often putting together department store items with statement pieces to come up with her IG-worthy looks.
10. She's a Pokemon fanatic.
There's more to this spunky drag queen than meets the eye. Beneath her sassy goddess stage persona, she's really just like any other normal person. For example, did you know that Aquaria's a huge Pokemon fan? She declared her undying love for the Japanese franchise on a Twitter post back in 2017. "Pokémon is honestly the most brilliant franchise ever and if u don't believe you are seriously incorrect! Pokémon is life," she unapologetically wrote.
