You know a show's set to blow you away and reduce to you to child-like tears when all it takes is a five minute preview to give you goosebumps. That's exactly how the team of Dani Girl introduced its two-hour play, with booming, emotional song numbers by each of their cast members. It's almost unfair how much they left us hanging until its opening run in August.
Dani Girl: A Musical About Hope, follows the journey of a nine-year-old girl as she battles leukemia. Except, this isn't the cliché grim cancer story you've probably already watched a number of times. Demonstrating the sheer power of the human imagination, to cope with her semi-isolation, Dani takes us on a fanciful ride into the world she's created for herself. Grounded on friendship, family, and hope, this musical promises to be equal parts riveting and heartbreaking.
To be directed by Toff de Venecia, Dani Girl stars Philstage Gawad Buhay awardee, Rebecca Coates, in the titular role of Dani Lyones. She's set to alternate with Felicity Kyle Napuli, or better known as Matilda from the show's Manila run. Other cast memebers incldue Luigi Quesada (Hair, Waitress), Daniel Drilon (Fun Home), Shiela Valderrama-Martinez (Binondo, Shrek), Pam Imperial (RENT, The Sound of Music), Lorenz Martinez (Miss Saigon), and Juliene Mendoza (Dekada '70).
