Your Top Beauty Questions Answered Is there a hack to make sure that eyeliner stays put?

From our college friends to our cousins, we’re always getting asked all sorts of questions related to skin care and makeup. Last week, we thought of extending it to you, our readers, by asking you to send in some of your own questions. We gathered a few of them here and got our beauty panel to give the answers straight to you.

Q: I always find my eyeliner leaving marking on my creases. Is there a hack to make sure that it stays put?

Janey says: Your best bet is liquid liner, because when that stuff dries it doesn’t budge. But if you can’t part with your smudgy pencil liner, try this layering trick:

1.Apply a small amount of eye primer as close to your lash line as possible.

2. Draw on eyeliner as usual.

3. Lightly dust translucent powder to set your liner.

It’s all about the layering. For really oily lids, you can also try reversing steps 2 and 3 and use a colored eye shadow to really set the line. That way your eyelid is devoid of any extra oils and your eyeliner has a really dry surface to adhere to.

Q: As much as I’d love to be a hubadera, I can’t because of back acne. What can be the cause of it and what treatments can you suggest to help get rid of the zits?

Zoe says: A pesky zit on the face is enough trouble but having back acne is another nightmare. Just like any other breakout, back acne comes from the dirt that clogs up your pores. That includes your conditioner, sunscreen, lotion, creams and massage oils. Mix all that with your natural body oils and sweat and you’ve got an instant recipe for disaster. However, it is preventable. Simply flip your hair over to the front when washing and conditioning to avoid leaving residue on your back. Also, switch to a lotion or body cream with less oil content to keep your skin hydrated.

Q: My makeup vanishes by the afternoon. How do I get it to stay plakado without looking too plakado?

Janey says: First, avoid anything heavy. Heavy eye makeup (smokey eyes are a definite no-no), heavy foundation (stick to tinted moisturizer), and bright colors are all high maintenance. The no-makeup makeup look is your best bet since it’s no maintenance. But if you must stray from my advice, these are the steps I take when I need my look sealed in.

Okay, again this is all about the layers. First, start off with a primer, an oil-free one to keep your makeup from sliding off is best. Set creams and liquids with powder (like cream blush with a powder blush and liquid foundation with translucent powder) to absorb any excess oils. And, lastly, a makeup setting spray is your best friend. My personal favorite is Urban Decay’s All-Nighter; I once used it on my face for a balmy, humid, sweaty beach wedding. I felt grimy and gross, but my makeup betrayed none of my feelings. Also, I cannot emphasize this enough; oil blotting sheets are your best friend. Instead of powdering your nose, stop oil from ruining your makeup with a blotting sheet every four hours.

Q: What's a good cleansing routine for combination skin? Is it okay to skip toner?

Zoe says: Having combination skin can mean having to use different products on different parts of your face. A light-weight gel or oil absorbing product can be ideal for your oily T-zone while creams only go on the dryer part of your face like your cheeks and the sides of your mouth. Best start with a gentle foaming cleanser (try Olay's Natural White Foaming Cleanser) which you can use twice a day. In the morning, go for a light serum (try Estée Lauder's Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher) and moisturizer to keep skin hydrated, concentrating on the dryer parts. Then at night, opt a rich moisturizer. Also, using a gentle toner on your T-zone helps repair your skin.
