Most people are hesitant to set a regular exercise routine for themselves. Why? Making the time to work out is one thing, but mostly it's the motivation to really get moving. But if you're looking for something that's easy and sustainable enough for a workout beginner, then running is definitely it. It doesn't cost a thing, plus, you can do it absolutely anywhere! All you need are a good pair of trainers and city streets to conquer. 

We talked to Nike Run Club coach (and triathlete!) Ian Banzon and got the scoop on why running is the easiest and effective way to get you fit.

1. Running improves your blood circulation and cardiovascular health.

Going for a run, no matter how short or long, increases heart rate, which helps improve blood circulation. Since cardio activities make the heart muscle contract at a higher rate, the blood moves rapidly through the arteries and veins, which boost circulation.

2. Running can help you lose excess weight.

Doing regular exercise helps you lose weight, in general. But exercises that require you to move with more intensity stimulates the so-called “afterburn,” which is good for losing weight. The afterburn makes your resting energy expenditure elevated and this helps your body burn fat even while you rest.

3. Running builds your stamina.

Running regularly helps your body expand its capacity to perform exercises longer and better. It conditions your heart and lungs, too, to work extensively as you do high intensity work-outs. 

4. Running improves your mood. 

Exercise of any kind makes you feel happier. Studies have shown that 30 minutes of walking or running on a treadmill can instantly lift the mood of someone suffering from depression. 

5. Running gives you a chance to meet new friends.

Get started by joining a run community that will motivate you to run regularly. You will not only improve your cardiovascular health but you will also earn new buddies!
