After the controversial Glutamax ad went viral, it started an important discussion on the use of skin whitening products. That being said, there are in fact many Filipinas who use lightening products as a beauty tool for different purposes. We asked Preview readers for their insights on what they actually use these products for, and here are their answers:
1. To brighten and even out skin tone
From the responses we received, we found out that many use whitening products for their intended purpose: to visibly brighten one's skin tone. However, the goal is not to lighten their skin's overall color. Instead, they use these products to brighten only specific areas to achieve an even-toned complexion. For example, many mentioned addressing tan lines and a dull complexion with skin whitening products.
Since most lightening products contain exfoliating and brightening ingredients, we don't doubt that using them would work to even out your skin tone. But we do recommend being very picky about what you choose to use. Opt for those with main ingredients like glycolic acid, niacinamide/vitamin B3, vitamin C, arbutin, licorice root, and kojic acid. Don't forget to use sunscreen (shop our non-greasy picks here) in combination with these as well to prevent further unevenness, or worse— sunburn!
2. To fade dark spots and acne marks
Aside from tan lines, the most frequently-mentioned skin concern addressed by whitening products are dark spots and pigmention from acne scars. The sentiments are similar to the comments above that say they only wish to brighten specific parts of their skin. Click here to find out the scar-fading products our readers have recommended!

3. To brighten dark underarms
Some parts of our body like our underarms, knees, and elbows are more prone to darkening because of constant friction. This is probably why we received a number of responses saying that they use lightening products on these areas, especially on their underarms. Again, selective brightening! If this is your concern, too, read up on our picks for underarm treatments and products!
