Jo Malone's latest launch has us absolutely delighted! Inpired by The Bloomsbury Set, which comprised of British writers, painters, and intellectuals—Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, and John Maynard Keynes were all notable members—the five scents capture the English life in the 1900s and celebrate British creativity at the same time.

The scents were formulated by master perfumer Yann Vasnier after the iconic Charleston Farmhouse in England's East Sussex. Fun fact: It was the unofficial headquarters of the previously mentioned Bloomsbury Set.

Each particular fragrance in the collection takes after a certain part of the quaint countryside house. For example, of the rather unusual Leather & Artemisia scent, Yann says, "When I stood in that library, I got a sense of excitement. I felt as though a lot had happened in that space and it felt alive with creativity. So I balanced the richness of the leather with aromatic plants such as absinthe and artemisia, which brings an intellectual sharpness to enliven the fragrance in the same way those plants might sharpen the mind. Because absinthe can make you feel highly imaginative, it’s a fun reference to their lifestyles. And to make the leather feel as close to this room as possible, I used patchouli and cypriol to represent the wooden shelves and soft paper pages."

The Tobacco & Mandarin variant had Yann envisioning the group at afternoon tea: "The challenge here was to find the balance between the dark tobacco and the bright cologne. I could see them at tea-time with their Earl Grey and Lady Grey tea, and their afternoon cake with a touch of mandarin in it."

Stirred by the free spirit of The Bloomsbury Set, the collection of scents capture the intoxicating essence of an unconventional life: the lily pond at dawn, bold blue hyacinths, blossoming fruit trees, absinthe afternoons and golden linseed on paint-stained hands, warming whisky and sweet pipe tobacco, and the secrets of waxed floors burnished by footsteps in the night.
The set, available starting March 2017, is comprised of five poetic scents: Blue Hyacintch, Tobacco & Mandarin, Whisky & Cedarwood, Leather & Artemisia, and Garden Lilies (P3870/30ml).
