Everyone with oily skin knows the struggle of staying even at least slightly matte when wearing foundation. We all have own our go-to tricks—some swear by mattifying primers, some "bake" their face with powder, while others simply resort to blotting every few hours. Although all of these methods do work, staying grease-free can be pretty easy if you have the right tricks up your sleeve.
For example, Hollywood actress Vanessa Hudgens (who's part Filipina, ICYDK) has a very minimal foundation routine despite having oily skin. She shared all her steps on Vogue's Beauty Secrets series, but we took note of only her most important tips just for you. Scroll ahead for the breakdown!
Vanessa Hudgens' Foundation Tips for Oily Skin
1. Do minimal skin prep.
Unlike many celebrities on Beauty Secrets, Vanessa only uses one product under makeup. "I don't want to put any serum or oil or anything, that's purely a night time thing for me just because I'm so oily. I just do a moisturizer," she says.
By keeping your skin prep minimal like her, you'll have less layers of product that could contribute to excess shine. Vanessa's personal pick is the Calming Day Moisturizer from her brand Know Beauty, but any hydrator or moisturizer fitting for your skin type would do!
2. Add coverage with concealer instead of liquid foundation.
According to Vanessa, the powder-heavy looks she wears for shoots have never been kind to her skin. She says it clogs her pores and causes a lot of breakouts, hence why her everyday makeup is nothing like it.
Instead of applying liquid foundation, for one, Vanessa adds minimal coverage with her favorite concealer from Rare Beauty. She focuses the product where she has the most redness (around the mouth) and then adds a lighter concealer under her eyes later on to brighten.
We love this method because as mentioned above, less is more with oily skin. The actress' technique allows her to correct her problem areas without piling on too much product, which coincidentally, helps prevent that greasy, cakey finish!
3. Finish your base makeup with powder foundation.
Liquid foundation may not be her thing, but Vanessa loves powder foundation. Her favorite is the Barepro Longwear powder foundation from Bare Minerals, and in the video, it's what she used to set her concealer and even out her complexion in one step.
"I really love this because it's got great coverage but you can still see skin underneath it. I hate it when you can't see skin," she explains. "This is great because I'm so oily and it just kind of sucks it up, and keeps me looking dewy and not greasy." If that doesn't make you want to try powder foundation, we don't know what will!
