Your empties aren't going into the ocean, that's for sure!

The fate of our empty beauty product containers are typically unclear. Even with conscious disposal, we're never sure where these plastic bottles and jars end up. Thankfully, however, times are changing. More brands have begun taking more responsibility for their products' impact on the environment by employing sustainable practices for used packaging.

Take V&M Naturals, for example. The local beauty brand has partnered with eco-friendly enterprise Green Antz to transform used plastic packaging into eco bricks. Eco bricks, for those unfamiliar, are basically hollow blocks that are partly composed of ground plastic laminates, which have been compressed for added durability. (Read about the process here.)

According to the brand's president Jamie Tan, clients who turn over their empty V&M products for this project receive five pesos per container returned. "We are also continuously encouraging our clients to return their bottles and updating them of the count regularly through our social media platforms," she adds. As of December 2018, V&M claims to have kept a total of 1573 containers out of the ocean.

To add to this initiative, V&M is holding their second tree-planting activity in partnership with Maynilad. The project helps reforestation and afforestation efforts. Customers can support this project and have a tree planted in their name by spending at least P1500 on V&M products before April 27. How cool is that?
