Perhaps the easiest upgrade you can do to your skincare routine is investing in a good serum. Whatever beauty concern you have right now, there's a serum to give your skin that extra boost to get through it. It's like having a healthy diet and still not forgetting to take vitamins at the same time. But is there be such a thing as a serum overdose? If serums are good for our skin, then it makes sense to use more than one for best results, right?
"I think prioritizing is very important. You should know your number one priority [for your skin]," says Shiseido's regional training director Nancy Woo. Accordingly, when choosing your first serum, start with one that addresses your main skin concern. This way, your skin won't be overwhelmed by the onslaught of potent ingredients and can instead work on solving your biggest issue first.
That said, if you already know what works for you, do note that it's okay to layer away. Like beauty expert Agoo Bengzon, you can use different serums to target specific skin problems. However, she recommends doing heavy research about your skincare products and their formulas first to avoid ingredients that cancel each other out.
To illustrate, Agoo shares that she has three serums in her routine: a Vitamin C serum for pigmentation, a hyaluronic acid-rich formula for treating fine lines, and a retinol serum for skin renewal. She applies each product with a one-minute interval to allow them to absorb into the skin.
However, keep in mind that testing products one at a time is very important if you want to layer serums. "If you use too many [at once], you won't know how well they actually work," Nancy explains. One serum might be working better than the other and you'll have no way of telling! For example, Agoo says that she waits at least a month to see results from a new product. That sounds like a long wait, but remember: You can always add or change products later if they don't work. Patience is key!
